SL Ports, Trade & Logistics Conference

The Two Day Conference and Exhibition on Sri Lanka Ports, Trade & Logistics commenced at the Hilton Hotel in Colombo was held on 10th July 2012. The conference was focused on several important areas on logistics such as; requirement of an efficient, integrated communication system to convert Sri Lanka to a real maritime hub, advancing the continued growth and development of the global maritime industry, the importance of emerging maritime hubs in the Indian Ocean, the newest and most exciting Indian Ocean market and gateway to Asia The conference was initiated by Minister of Transport Kumara Welgama and was addressed by a number of domestic and international speakers including Dr. Priyath B. Wickrama – Chairman of SLPA, Capt. Nihal Keppetipola – Managing Director of SLPA, M.M.C. Ferdinando – Chairman of the SL Board of Investment, Dr. Willie Gamage – Chairman and CEO of the SL Strategic Enterprise Management Agency, Gen. Sanath Karunarathne – Director (Security) SLPA, Rohan Masakorala.

Sri Lanka's performance in trade logistics increases

according to the World Bank’s Logistic Performance Index (LPI), Sri Lanka has jumped to 81 st place from being 137th, out of 155 countries. This is a significant development in Sri Lankan logistic trade. This signifies the improvement in in infrastructure and quality of logistics services in Sri Lanka. The Logistics Performance Index overall score reflects assessments of a country's logistics based on efficiency of the customs clearance process, quality of trade- and transport-related infrastructure, ease of arranging competitively priced shipments, quality of logistics services, ability to track and trace consignments, and frequency with which shipments reach the consignee within the scheduled time. The index ranges from 1 to 5, with a higher score representing better performance. (World Bank) Sri Lanka scored an average of 2.75. And for the key aspects of the index; which are Customs Infrastructure, International Shipments, Logistics Competence, Tracking & Tracing and Timliness, Sri Lanka scored 2.58, 2.50, 3.00, 2.80, 2.65 and 2.90 respectively. Singapore, Hong Kong & China, Finland, Germany and Netherlands were able to come to the first five places.

FedEx Corp. announced it has completed the $780 million cash purchase of the LTL operations of Watkins Motor Lines and certain affiliates. A privately held company based in Lakeland, Fla., Watkins Motor Lines is a leading provider of long-haul LTL services with more than $1 billion in annual revenue.

Boeing Confirms Air Sahara Order for 10 737-800s

The Boeing Company confirmed a previously unidentified Air Sahara order for 10 Next-Generation 737-800 airplanes. Air Sahara placed the order in the first quarter of 2006 and was listed in the unidentified category on Boeing's Orders and Deliveries web site. Valued at more than $700 million at list prices, deliveries are scheduled to begin in mid 2009.
